“It cannot know, as it does not think!”

That's exactly it. I've been trying to tell people this for a long time. These machines are not actually speaking. They are not actually saying things. They are just assembling a statistically appropriate response.

Maybe that is what artificial intelligence really means. It's just the simulation of intelligence.

This is very concerning. I saw a talk by a Steiner advocate and it hit home in an alarming way how people are glibly handing their thinking, and now, emotional and spiritual wellbeing over to...A.I.?! We got here so dizzyingly fast. Maybe that's the point, make it so fast and easy, colourful and sensational to capture people in its thrall and to have them not think about what they are really engaging with, what is real, true, and the knock on effect will be enormous. I've seen people go overboard about ChatGPT (or whatever, sorry, don't know the names ) and some can't discern between what is A.I. and what is real, and don't seem to care. Perhaps the idea is greater social isolation, people trust AI because it won't challenge them so much as the world, people and events do, or when they are wrong. It panders to them or hooks them into a buzz and I can see this stopping many from stop people reflecting or going inwards. Where is sovereignty then?
