Unveiling the Holy Guardian Angel
One of the most moving conversations I ever had was in Minnesota. I was to shoot Lon Milo DuQuette at a gorgeous Art Deco location in the city, and I was doing the shooting, which is rare and awkward in the first place as I am no cameraman and more likely to capture the "in-between" bits, by turning the camera off rather than on when I am supposed to. Chance LOVES that about me, as you might imagine. Time was limited; we had a mere 45 minutes, and I had flown all the way from Australia, so the pressure was immense. The shoot involved capturing scenic shots only. This was not an interview, nor were there scripted lines—we ended up just talking. This was the time that Lon decided to tell me about the circumstances around his attainment of the knowledge and conversation with his Holy Guardian Angel.
Well, can you imagine what happened next? There I was, peering through the small camera viewer, tears streaming down my face as he unfolded his story. It wouldn't be right for me to disclose the details, but believe me when I say it was truly magical. Chance even proclaimed it the most beautiful footage he had ever witnessed, surpassing what he could have accomplished. Can you imagine that?
So then you might be asking what this Holy Guardian Angel thing is and why you would want "knowledge of and conversation with it", and perhaps even why it was all so emotional. Well, love is the answer to the third question, of course, so let me dig into the other two!
In Thelema and the Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO), knowledge of and conversation with the Holy Guardian Angel is considered a central aspect of spiritual development and attainment. The Holy Guardian Angel is believed to be a higher spiritual entity or a divine aspect within oneself that represents the truest and highest self.
Knowledge of the Holy Guardian Angel refers to gaining insight, understanding, and awareness of this spiritual presence. It involves recognizing and establishing a conscious connection with the Holy Guardian Angel through personal experiences, intuition, meditation, ritual practices, and other spiritual techniques. On the other hand, the Khu represents a higher spiritual aspect of the individual, often associated with their radiant and divine nature. The Khu is connected to the individual's spiritual journey and transformation, particularly after death, when it seeks to unite with higher realms and ascend to a more elevated existence.
It's important to note that the concepts of Ka and Khu, while distinct in Ancient Egyptian mythology, are not directly associated with the concept of the Holy Guardian Angel in Thelema. The Holy Guardian Angel in Thelema represents a personal divine aspect or higher self within oneself, whereas the Ka and Khu in Ancient Egyptian mythology refer to different aspects of an individual's spiritual existence in a broader religious and cultural context.
In the context of Thelema, the relationship between the Holy Guardian Angel and the Great Work is significant. The Great Work refers to the spiritual and transformative process of self-realization and self-transcendence pursued by individuals within the Thelemic tradition.
